Thunder Over Louisville Is A Blast!
In the middle of April a ton of noise comes out of Louisville Kentucky along the Ohio River. It's not people cheering for the horses in a famous horse race.... no, that event is about 2 weeks later. The noise is Thunder Over Louisville. Thunder, as the locals refer to the event, is an all day party on the river. In the afternoon aerial gymnastics are performed by various flight groups. Around 9:30 pm the star spangled banner is blared over many speakers as the fireworks begin.
Suddenly fireworks are going off everywhere. The fireworks show, one of the biggest in the country, lasts at least 25 minutes. The locals end up in a traffic jam for an hour or 2, so sit back, enjoy the music, the party. and the official start of the Kentucky Derby Festival.
The biggest debate is where you should watch the party. Some people go to "the sunny side of louisville" New Albany Indiana. Other people think the waterfront park is the place to be. Restaurants along the river charge over $200.00 per person for a dinner buffet. other people have parties on top of garage parking lots, inside the office buildings, or the belvedere. The hotel rooms are also great for watching the festivities, while not being in the traffic, or the crowds. The hotel rooms for this one night can be up to $1000.00. Also being on the river offers excellent views of Louisville, the fireworks, and the event. The police limit how many boats are allowed on the river, so remember to get approval ahead of time.
Go ahead and bring your cooler, a radio, ear plugs, plenty of one dollar bills, and the whole family for an explosive night of fun.
